My interest in child care started at a very young age. At the age of twelve I started to babysit for my next door neighbors during the summer. Shortly after when I turned thirteen, I signed up for my first babysitting class. The class was through Red Cross and I learned CPR and how to keep a child safe. After completing my Red Cross course, I started to seek out more babysitting jobs and worked with quite a few families. Once I started my sophomore year at Evanston Township High School I began to work weekly for the new neighbors. Once a week I would take care of their child. I would feed her and help her with her homework. Over the rest of my high school career I began to work for them more. Eventually I was working after school a minimum of three times a week for them. Read more I learned and grew a lot as a caregiver during my time with them. During my high school career I also worked with the Evanston Libraries. I worked with them year round, but during the summer I helped with the children's reading program. It was what sparked my desire to go major in Early Childhood Education. It was an incredible experience to listen to the children talk about the books they had read and what they were excited to read next. After high school I moved into the city to attend DePaul University. I spent two years there majoring in Early Childhood Education. I gained a lot of experience and knowledge in those two years. The program there was amazing because within my first year I was volunteering at the local daycare. I helped with both the infants and the toddlers. I was able to actually practice the skills I had learned in class to engage the children and help them learn through play and other activities. I eventually left DePaul because I wanted to start working and saving money. I ended up moving to Seattle where I was a nanny. I worked as a nanny for three years for the same family. I worked every weekday for four hours after school. Except during the summer when I would work more. It was an unbelievable experience to help the children learn and mature into smart and wonderful individuals. They were a second family to me while I was living in Seattle. I spent those three years with them helping with homework, picking them up from school, organizing carpools, taking care of them when ill, grocery shopping, and helping with household chores. Now I am back in Evanston and hoping to find another family to work closely with!
