First, I LOVE animals and am a longtime pet owner. I have more than twenty years' experience with dogs, cats and birds (parakeets, cockatiels and parrots).

Dogs: My dogs have been exceptionally wonderful, and yet have sometimes required exceptional care. As a result, I know how to give medication in the form of pills, suppositories, eye drops and nose drops, how to feed on a strict schedule, how to bathe with special shampoos, and how give allergy shots. I know how to deal with digestive issues, both chronic and urgent. I have helped a dog who had heat exhaustion (not due to my lack of care, but someone else's...I would NEVER leave a dog in the car, period). I can lift 40-50 pounds to get a dog into a car and/or outside when necessary.

Cats: I have had cats, including those that require special medical care. I know how to get a cat distracted to give him subcutaneous fluids or an insulin shot. I know how to get them into a carrier. I can pill them.

Birds: One of my parakeets lived about 10 years, which I am told is a long time for a parakeet. Though they are incredibly cheerful when in good health, I know that parakeets are delicate creatures, and that they can't stand even a whiff of a draft. I have had two cockatiels, one of whom lived for nearly 30 years. I have cared for a parrot, so I know that avocado is a big no-no. I also know that parrots are different from other birds in that they actually, truly can talk - they just need the vocabulary!
