My first job in high school was being a teaching assistant for religious classes and then working at a daycare. I continued to explore careers with children working as a teaching assistant in public schools and as a tutor while studying in college. I received my master's degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in working with children and families. I was a mental health counselor for about 10 years and enjoyed the work that I did with children. In the last 5 years, I went back to tutoring, babysitting and working with developmentally disabled individuals to help them build social skills, emotion regulation skills and independent living skills. I have found that it is very important to build a trusting relationship with children and always to build off of their strengths. Children and individuals with disability thrive in a positive environment that has both structure and gives them some flexibility to make their own choices and explore their interests.
