Elderly Articulate Disabled Parent in need of occasional Personal Assistance
Posted by Rebecca N. on 4/2/2024
- $40.00 per hour
My mother (77, ambulatory with end stage COPD/asthma & IBS) has a local network of helpers who I coordinate with to make sure household chores and meal prep are taken care of. She is generally self sufficient unless subject to exacerbation or other impacting illness (eg inner ear infection creating dizziness, recovery from hospitalization for heart or breathing issues), and I support her trips to the doctors.
She lives (intentionally) in a two story house with laundry and bedroom on second floor - and kitchen, relaxing and bathing facilities on first floor. She does not drive, and does not usually spend significant time outside. She is reasonably technically literate with a laptop but does not use a cell phone.
We do not have a back up plan so to date if her care falls through I need to be present for her.
Duties could include:
picking up groceries or prescriptions
light housekeeping/organizing
help with laundry and taking out the trash
meal/beverage prep
support with untangling oxygen hose or fetching medication from the refrigerator
assistance with dressing after bathing
Desired skills:
Some experience with respiratory/oxygen therapy background - the hoses and machines can be a little overwhelming
Ability to recognize and support an unsteady adult
Sense of humor
Patience (inhaled steroids are an unfriendly driver, can make the patient grumpy and short tempered)
She is a former executive and somewhat feistily independent and particular.
Care Recipient
- Female
- Somewhat receptive to outside help
- Age range: 75 to 84 years old
