I have worked with intellectually disabled adults for close to 4 years. I plan to make a career of the medical field. I took CNA courses and did pass but did not go to get state certified. I have basic nursing knowledge along with CNA skills such as manual blood pressure reading, manual pulse, respirations, basic anatomy knowledge, tracheotomy care, colostomy care, first aid/CPR with blood born pathogen certification, catheter care, burn care, experience with medications, blood sugar checking and administering injections, peri care, gait belt experience, ability to change sheets with individuals in them, hoyer lift experience and much more. If you took the time to read to this point, I would like to say that, while I feel this knowledge is important, it isn't everything. I care about individuals. I try to take time to make them feel special and I put all of myself in to these people because to me, they become family. Some people say that I care too much. That may be true, but sometimes, too much can be just enough
