My only child has down syndrome. He is now 35 years old and lives a relatively independent life in his own apartment. Having Daniel as my son has given me tremendous compassion for disabled people. As a result, I have spent the last 25 years volunteering my time to provide
free entertainment by DJing dances for various agencies that care
for the disabled. Professionally, I worked as a caregiver for two different agencies in the State of Oregon. All the following work is verifiable:
Caregiver for Shangri-La, Corporation in Newport, Oregon
Worked unassisted during a 10 hour night shift at Big Creek, a five person residential group home. Residents had spina bifida and required the use of a walker/wheelchair and required assistance moving about. Other resident (weighing almost 300 pounds) with spina bifida required a hoyer for movement between his bedroom, shower and living area. I bathed all residents and prepared their meals and to-go lunches with respect to dietary needs. Changed all of their bedding and adult briefs regularly. Ordered and administered their medications. Monitored blood sugar levels for diabetics and gave insulin shots to those who required it. Accompanied "clients" to doctor visits and kept detail notes of these visits and then transferred to computer records. Transported them to day programs in the morning. Took them for long and frequent rides along the beautiful Oregon Coastline. Also for Shangri-La, I worked at Benton House, I worked the overnight shift alone caring for 5 residents who were mentally ill. I also worked for the State of Oregon doing private in-home care for one 45 year old male with severe down syndrome. This individual required constant supervision and physical intervention due to his being continually self injurious. He also was prone to kicking/hitting other people as well as walls, windows and anything in his way. Hence, a large part of my job was to keep him from hurting himself and others, especially when he went out in public... I bathed him daily and changed his briefs/clothes frequently, cooked for him, did his laundry, cared for his pets (2 dogs), cleaned most of the house. Ran errands, took him for walks along the seashore in Yachats, Oregon. I also cared for his father who was elderly and had dementia. My Wage is negotiable as I already have a good retirement.
