I have approximately 15 years experience working and caring for people with disabilities of all ages... children, teens, young adults and the elderly. Regardless, they all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. When a senior has had medical setbacks, or a stroke we need to help them learn life skills all over again... very similar to working with kids with disabilities, they need to learn life skills. In general it is a teaching and learning experience... with patience and understanding. No one should ever get "mad" when the client is learning and never shamed... they need your help... my help to make them the best that they can be. Personal hygiene is important, teaching and learning. Everything is a teaching experience... and a learning one.
My philosophy is "less is more" meaning the less we do for them, the more they will do for themselves. Teaching and caring with kindness.
I worked for the Anoka Hennepin School District in Minnesota in a program with 100 plus young adults all with a disability. I have also worked privately for adults and children with physical disabilities, and those who were more profound... needing more hands on care. Prepare meals, laundry, light house cleaning, feeding or assisting, toileting, bathing, suctioning airways or trachs, g-tube feeding, changing bandages, changing male external caths, making medical appointments and taking client to needed appts. Of course there is also fun things to do with clients too! Each client is unique and their cares will be tailored to fit their needs.
Fee's and miles can be negotiated based on each situation. I would consider overnight, a weekend, a week or daily. Time and travel has to be considered. Thank you.
