I have a great background for the field in which I plan to pursue. I have not ever had a circumstance or inconsistency with my GPA through college. I have taught elementary school for 10 years and had conferences with families from all backgrounds. I developed plans for interventions to help students achieve and/or intervene when necessary on a child’s behalf. I have had to counsel parents in the right direction in many ways which weren’t even a part of my job. Again, I am the teacher’s class that the principal felt best sticking the troubled kids in. I do not just shove them aside, rather I get to know them and why they behave the way they do. I have a pharmacist whose child was in my class, he suffers from bipolar disorder and Asperger’s and she is more than willing to write me a recommendation. While I do not have formal education in counseling, I do believe the education I do have has encompassed the field.
My experience in counseling is quite diverse. I have the knowledge of many dynamics of multicultural families. I have sat in many meetings under an array of different difficulties within family atmospheres. I have also worked in a tutoring setting and an after school setting. This has put me in a much like second mother type position, where I am with the student more than the actual parents. It is a fantastic bond of trust. Recently, I have sat in groups of young adults suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. I have voluntarily helped these individuals to turn their negatives into a positive to achieve the life that they truly want. I am currently working with AA as a volunteer. I hope to expand my experience through this program to better help my community.
