I like keeping people company. Some people are Lonely and need companionship. It shows when they and their families are glad or anxious to see you. It gives you a warm feeling of accomplishment when they enjoy your company and wonder when you are coming back.
My experience with caregivers starts when my father was put in a retirement home, and I was responsible for keeping my mother company. Although I was not pursuing actual employment, I had daily responsibilities to help maintain the household. Mom really appreciated my companionship as she was really afraid of being alone. I did things for or with her such as shopping, doctor visits, veterinary care for her dog and helped make or had meals together. We also watched her favorite tv shows together, which shows that even under normal circumstances, caregiving plays a vital role in lonely people’s lives. We talked about things of the past, present and future.
Now she is in an actual care home due to a heart attack and is recovering. When I go to visit, I observe the daily duties of the nurses. When they are overwhelmed with other patients, I help them do things for my mom, such as help exercise her, feed her, help them change her, clean her, feed her, as well as help put her clothes on. Sometimes I help them help my mother transfer from bed to wheelchair and back the other way. I’ve gained an appreciation for helping people who need that extra help.
