My brother had a stroke last year that rendered him paralyzed on the right side of his body, unable to speak, and dependent on feeding and breathing tubes. He resided near Tampa, Florida. I lived in Chicago. He needed someone to care for him who really loved him, so I put my affairs in order here and relocated to Tampa to care for him. I lived with him in his hospital room and was trained by his doctors and nurses to care for him in every way, from the sterile care of his tracheostomy to bathing him, and providing him speech therapy. I was hoping that together, my brother and I would work on his rehabilitation toward the point when I would be able to relocate him medically safely to Chicago where I could care for him with additional help from my siblings here. Unfortunately, my brother passed before this could happen, but everyday that I had with him was, though at times exhausting and frustrating, filled with joy. I would like to bring joy to anyone I care for.
