Hi There,
My name is Nkanyezi, I am a certified CNA. I have worked 2 years at a nursing home. It was intense especially when my shift was to work the third floor which was our critical section. My duties included making beds for both bed ridden patients and independent ones. Bathing patients in bed or those with little mobility I helped them into a wheel chair rolling them into a shower.

I helped with a change of clothes, feedings during meal times. Cleaning of their rooms and generally ensure their needs were met and were safe. Unfortunately in a nursing home setting it is almost impossible to provide adequate attention with every patient as one would take care of around 18 patients and sometimes more if we were short staffed. With everything that had to be done before the next shift started. It was always a go-go-go situation doing everything as fast a one could.

After two years I moved into a more in home one on one care which allowed me to truly connect with my clients on an intimate level. I enjoyed getting to know them personal and the one on one conversations were the best. I realized this type setting fit me best and absolutely fell in love with it.

I enjoyed cooking, baking taking walks reading to them and watching some of the old classic TV series with them. I also helped with laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping as well as driving my clients to their doctors’ appointments. Some of my clients required daily light exercise to help with their flexibility and mobility. Not many liked that part. I always found myself having to bribe them with their favorite things in order to get them to do it.

Through all these experiences I have learnt a lot about true compassion, patience, kindness and what it truly means when one is generous with their love, care and their time.
