I am currently a pre-med/English major at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After this summer semester I will be graduating, but I have a year before I will hopefully be starting medical school.
Before I began my pre-med track I obtained my CNA certificate from South Suburban College in South Holland. It has not been renewed since I obtained it back in 2011.
A little over a year ago my step-father suffered a massive stroke and has since then been partially paralyzed on his one side. He also has been suffering from aphasia and requires a lot of patience and understanding. I have lived with my mother and step-father since I began courses at UIC, so I have been along for the journey to recovery for him. It has been an emotionally trying experience, but it has also showed me what it really means to love another person. To be able to sacrifice and do for another, in a way that wasn't thought of before. It is second nature to me now to help assist him in any way. I have also learned that sometimes the best thing to do is to step back and allow that person to do things on their own as well. That last point has been the most difficult for me, but I know that independence is a crucial part of recovery as well as daily living.
I want to eventually be an Anesthesiologist when I finish medical school. I have a long ways to go still until I reach that point though. I would love to be able to be a positive part of a person's life who needs that support. I want to bring a smile and warmth to the field of caring for another individual.
