My background is in the arts and cultural sector of the non-profit world, working in either executive or managerial positions for 3 decades. When I moved to Philadelphia at the end of 2015 I chose to work as a consultant with very limited hours, to do volunteer work, and also to make a contribution as a caregiver in my community.
I worked part-time as a companion to a woman with early onset Alzheimer's. I prepared lunch for her, arranged afternoons of activities including arts and crafts, outings to cultural sites, nature walks, household activities, shopping, etc. I also accompanied her to medical appointments, using my car for transportation. I stayed in that position till her condition deteriorated to the point that she needed to move into a full time care residential facility.
