I've known I wanted to work with elderly people since I was in my teens playing Mah Jong with family friends and sauntering around the mall with my grandfather. I've volunteered, interned, and worked at facilities for seniors but I spent 3 1/2 years at an amazing program that provided socially isolated homebound seniors with recreational and leisure activities and supplies. In a 1:1 setting I was able to patiently provide undivided individual attention to my Participants and their leisure needs by increasing their motivation, decreasing feelings of depression, and ultimately improving their quality of life.
A few years ago I became a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist and following that earned a Master's Degree in that field.
I am passionate about working with this population that still has so much to offer despite limiting capabilities.
