I have worked with seniors and the disabled off and on through the years since I've been 17 years old. Through word of mouth in our church that I attended then, I became known for my services as a senior care provider, as well as a babysitter, pet sitter and housekeeper.
Having first-hand experience helping with my dad as a young person and into my thirties when he had Alzheimer's and cancer, and then through the years helping my mom and taking care of her when she had a stroke and helped her until she passed has given me insight and extra compassion for people and their families. I can relate to what people are going through when their loved one is facing health issues and sudden circumstances that changes their lives forever. But knowing there is someone else to help, who cares is encouraging and helps alleviate some of the stress and pressure.
I did private care and at first I was doing nurse aide duties including transfers, dressing, bathing, taking vitals, lifting, social interaction as well as cooking, providing lighthousekeeping, taking them to medical appointments and getting groceries, etc.
I also worked for companies where I did senior companion and care. Although my title was Companion my duties expanded way beyond that and I was doing nurse's Aid duties again.
As Ive grown older I've still cared for seniors and the disabled but I became more of a companion and didn't do the lifting as much.
Nowadays I would be happy to be a companion and friend to a senior, keeping them company, playing games, talking, listening to music, reminding them of their medicine, cooking, doing occasional light house keeping, etc.
