Susan’s Bio
For my entire adult life I have worked helping people in professional, private and volunteer sectors. My undergrad degree is in sociology and obtained my masters in education. My first job after graduating college was with the Area Agency on Aging. As a caseworker I assessed clients for care to help them remain in their home. I also served as a Protective Service Worker responding to emergencies. Later in my career I would review personal care boarding home, hospital and nursing home medical charts in addition to interviewing clients and their families. I needed to make sure that a client was in the least restrictive environment and receiving the best care. I also advocated for clients that were in these settings as the appointed Ombudsmen.
I left the Area Agency on Aging for a state job with the Department of Welfare. Followed by a short career as an Elementary Teacher. I left this job and returned to my home state of NJ to take care of my mother who was dying from cancer. After her passing I stayed in New Jersey and became a woman owner in a man’s world of Bait and Tackle. This was on an 18 mile island, Long Beach Island (LBI). My clientele was mostly elderly men which resulted in caring for an elderly veteran that resided on the island year round. This 90 year old required personal care and social stimulation. Afterwards I worked full time with severely mentally ill people of all ages. This was in addition to owning the seasonal bait and tackle business and raising a family.
Two years ago I moved to North Carolina & I needed to decide what I wanted to do for employment. What has always brought me the most joy is working with the geriatric population. Currently I work part time as a caregiver in a retirement community. While I love it and will remain in that capacity because I adore my clients I am looking to serve in a private capacity. The benefits of having one caregiver is so important for social, mental, emotional support as well as providing peace of mind for the family.
I have served in every capacity in elderly caregiving roles. Helping people is what I’m best at & makes my heart smile!
