Caregiver companions provide basic care to individuals who cannot care for themselves. Most often this involves helping children or the elderly, but caregivers can work with people of all ages. Services may be required for long-term care or for short-term recovery. Taking vital signs and assisting with medication are part of the caregiver’s responsibilities. The duties of a caregiver companion are many, and vary based on the needs of the individual being cared for. They include assistance getting to the restroom, bathing, dressing and cooking. The companionship portion of the job is as important as the physical assistance. Often the elderly look forward to caregiver visits as a time of social interaction, and in some cases, a time to get out of the house.
