About 15 years ago I cared for 2 elderly people. One was a female Alice was her name, sweet soul. At first she just needed companionship, talking with her about her life, going through her family photos, making her favorite lunch of sweet potatoes and lamb chops, running light errands for her to the grocery store. This was a part time job on weekends. She loved sending me out for errands it’s almost like she was able to shop through me. As her health got worse responsibilities were to ensure that she was helped to go to the bathroom and essentially changing her diapers. Sponge bathing at times if it fell on my shift. Also ensured she took her medication and also at later time administering her meds as per her family’s instructions so that she was comfortable in her state.

I also watched an elderly man Peter after Alice who at first was suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s . He needed help with getting up to his walker, grooming, feeding at times, keeping him happy, watching golf with him and ensuring he was comfortable thorough out the day. Taking quick walks with him outside. As time progressed the family put him in a nursing home but still wanted for me and other shift workers to be present with him to ensure that he was well taken care of. While the nursing stuff was there we would ensure if there was anything he needed we were there to quickly provide him with help so that he didn’t have to wait.
