Rachael’s Bio

Why do people treat senior citizens as if they're all the same? Why do well-meaning doctors tend to seniors' physical needs and ignore their need for intellectual and emotional growth? When my grandma was in an assisted living facility, she was TOLD when it was time to play Bingo. When I asked her what she wanted to do, guess what? She didn't want to play Bingo. We hopped in the car and I took her to a new dessert cafe down the street instead. We chatted with fellow patrons and enjoyed the nice weather. She lived to be 93--perhaps it was her love of sweets that kept her here for so long! :)

I've been volunteering with senior citizens since high school. I've grown to love this community of people, and I've come to see how diverse the group is. My love for volunteering with them has led me to per diem/occasional employment at a senior citizen center.

My love for seniors has also led me to start my own intergenerational activities group; I plan monthly activities for senior citizens and younger people. When people of all ages intermingle, everyone benefits! My seniors and I have had a great time singing at cabaret open mic nights, grabbing a slice of pizza, enjoying a night at the ballet, exploring the street art and graffiti of Bushwick, Brooklyn, attending the book launch of a 74-year-old East Village author--and more! I do not charge any fees for membership, and I run my group on a volunteer basis. This means that seniors on a fixed income can experience new and different things in the city without spending a lot of money. I LOVE the adventures my friends and I have with my seniors, and my seniors love it too. (Wanna check out our adventures? Ask me for the link to my website!)

I'm seeking occasional/part-time employment providing warm, friendly, patient companionship for a senior. I'm willing to take seniors out for doctors appointments and such--but I'm also good at gently prodding someone to visit a museum or even play a word game at home, instead of sitting in front of the TV. I think there are MANY small ways in which a caregiver can brighten a senior's day, even if the senior is completely homebound. (Is it time for lunch? Let me arrange that plate of food in a beautiful way and play your senior some of his favorite music while he eats!)

I look forward to bringing a compassionate, positive influence to your senior's day!
