For as long as I can remember, I have always had a nurturing/solicitous personality which led to me seeking experiences where I could further nurture this side of me. This first led to babysitting for an autistic individual and teen and as expected, it made me realize that this was something I loved doing. Later years, I babysat for family friends occasionally which made me appreciate the smiles/laughter shared in such experiences. It was my role as a support system for a group of autistic individuals that truly helped me understand the challenges of caretaking while simultaneously revealing the beauty of it, which are those bonds formed and the memories shared. Seeing the difference you make by simply showing up and supporting/caring for them makes it worthwhile.
