I became a caregiver, right out of high school, when my grandmother fell and became incapacitated, before home health aides were as common as they are now,to allow her to remain in her home, as she very much wished to do so,as did my mother and her three sisters. I am so grateful and privileged to have had this time with her in her final years,I consider it a gift. I knew from this experience that I wanted to continue on the path as a caregiver, and this is what I have done, career wise. It has been so rewarding and fulfilling. Every job that I have done has been long term and lasted a number of years. I have cared for the entire spectrum of life,from infants up to a 102 year old lady. I love doing what I do. On another note, one of my more recent "jobs",because it really wasn't, was returning home to assist with taking care of my father in the lasts months of his life,before kidney failure that led to his hospitalization and ultimately, his passing. I have done end of life hospice care and felt such a sense of accomplishment at being there to ease the burden on someone going through that,as well as their loved ones. I have been a home health aide,personal care attendant, and licensed nursing assistant in the past.
