I have my Bachelor degree in Math Education and a Masters degree in School Guidance Counseling.
I have always been very detailed oriented and love math. After studying secondary math for 4yrs at college, I had planned on heading into the Actuary field. I found there was one thing lacking in the career path I had chosen, this was social interaction. I stayed a fifth year and completed my student teaching and graduated with a Secondary Math Education Degree. During my first year of teaching I began working with the Guidance Counselors in an after school program for special needs children. I realized how much I enjoyed working one on one with students. I then went back to college for my masters degree in Counseling and Psychology in Education k-12. I worked closely with the Counselors at both Fox Chapel High School and Dorseyville Middle School where I did my internship. While there, my name was put on the math tutoring list. I now have been tutoring for the last 15yrs. It began with a small group of children, but grew by word of mouth. It also began with math, but after seeing my degree it spread into seasons of teaching all subject and organizational skills. I have worked with a very diverse group of children, from over achieving students who were on track to graduate early, to special needs children's that required a daily review of their weekly lessons. I enjoyed this one on one time with my students and was able to use both my teaching education and counseling degree. Every child was unique and everyday different and I truly enjoyed this. The hours began after school 3:30-8:00 and the pay was $30-$45per hr, depending on the driving situations. I taught college prep courses seasonally. This was ideal because I was able to spend all day raising my two children.
Two years ago when my youngest child began school, this schedule did not work. My children are now in Elementary school, they leave at 8:30am and are finished at 3:00pm. I miss working with my students who I grew to know personally, I had a close relationship with each child and parent. We adjusted our review schedules daily and had a lot of fun. Some students had an underlying need for more personal attention and emotional needs then academic. It was a satisfying job. I was able to see the concerns from all three perspectives- through the eyes of a teacher, student and parent.
I am looking for a day time job that will allow me to use both my teaching and counseling experience.
