I have served as a Mother (biological, step, mentor) for 40 years. I have served as a foster parent for 22 years. I began providing short-term recovery and long-term companion care services for seniors at the age of 18. I have provided pet sitting for the past 9 years. My varied clients have taught me the following “truths” of companion care: (1) My service as a companion care provider varies based on the need of each client. In the past I have provided physical assistance for getting to and from the restroom, bathing, dressing, and cooking. (2) My service as a companion care provider includes social interaction with the client and often service as an important liaison between family members and medical professionals. I have been told in professional and personal settings my social interaction with diverse clients is my gift. (3) Housekeeping activities such as dusting, vacuuming, bathroom cleanings, and kitchen cleanings are negotiable. In addition, I have cultivated particular skills sets and knowledge (over the past 16 years) with individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction and women experiencing both of these simultaneously.
