Katharine’s Bio

I am a Senior at the College of Charleston (CofC) in the third semester of the School of Education program for Early Childhood Education. I have successfully completed the Professional Program Semester 1 for Teacher Education Certification with a 3.733 GPA, Semester 2 with a 4.0GPA, and am on track to graduate in Spring 2011. I was awarded the CERRA scholarship for the South Carolina Teaching Fellows program, as well. I currently serve as the Senior Representative in the Governance Council and a member of the Recruitment Committee.
I am going to get my degree teaching PreK-3, but I prefer Kindergarten and 1st grade! I absolutely love children and have had an extensive amount of experience working with kids ranging from young infants to teenagers.
I am very passionate about the arts and have been involved in numerous school plays, dance competitions/performances, and music with piano, choir, and the violin. I originally was born in Syracuse, New York, but moved when I was about ten years old to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I went to North Myrtle Beach High School, but attended classes at a charter school called the Academy for Arts, Science, and Technology.

I absolutely love animals and in August 2009, I began volunteering every week with Pet Helpers Rescue and Adoption Shelter. I have also fostered two puppies with Leash on Life Dog Rescue and six kittens with Palmetto Paws Animal Rescue.
Just recently, I was given the opportunity to gain more experience teaching in schools by working with De Daltorio, the Director of Humane Education, with the Charleston Animal Society's Pet Buddies Club. This is an educational program that teaches 64 different classes (ranging from 1st-6th grade) in Charleston County Public Schools of the care and responsibility of owning a pet, the importance of spaying and neutering pets, and the prevention of animal cruelty.
When I become a teacher, I will incorporate humane education into my classroom practice by teaching my students the proper care for animals. I think it's critical for children and adults to understand the importance of spaying and neutering pets. As a member of the humane organization, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), I feel it is my duty to help prevent the cruelty to animals and give back to my community using my role as an educator.
