Hi, I’m Lydia! I’ve always loved being around kids. Growing up in a big family with 18 siblings gave me lots of experience with children of all ages and personalities. Four of my siblings have special needs, and from an early age I helped care for them—whether that meant lending a hand with daily routines, being patient when they needed extra support, or just being a steady friend they could count on. Over the years, I’ve also worked with children on the autism spectrum. In my job with a company that provided support services, I assisted families with potty training, food training, and building language skills. While the company used ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), I personally don’t agree with every method, and those experiences really shaped the way I see caregiving. They taught me not only how to support growth, but also what not to do—helping me focus on raising confident, happy kids by encouraging their strengths and respecting who they are. By the time I was 12, I was already babysitting without adult supervision, and that taught me responsibility and confidence at a young age. I learned how to keep kids entertained, how to create a safe environment, and most importantly, how to be someone they could trust. When I was 16, I even traveled to England to work as a caregiver for a woman with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). That experience expanded my caregiving skills—I helped with laundry, cooking meals, assisting her in the bathroom, giving her showers, and making sure she was comfortable at night. What I enjoy most about working with kids is knowing that every interaction, no matter how small, shapes the way they see the world. Sometimes it’s through teaching, other times it’s just through listening, laughing, or playing alongside them. I’m 22 years old and in December I will have two Bachelor science degrees in Criminology/Criminal Justice and Crime Scene Investigation. I went to Nursing school for a year but decided to take a break partly for my mental health and also because of COVID. My whole life I have loved children and grew up babysitting my 6 cousins lots of times as well as my own special needs brother. My cousins were aged 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 6 months when I first began in high school. The oldest child is special needs and needs extra care such as tube feeding. I also grew up with a special needs older brother who could not talk or walk. I would always play with him/entertain him, help clean and change his diaper, and help feed him. I always put others first in my care and care about their comfort and feelings. He passed away unfortunately, but he had such an impact on me and my heart.
