Marcie’s Bio

Hi! I’m Marcie Bernard, a passionate pre-veterinary professional with extensive hands-on experience in both small and large animal care, wildlife rehabilitation, and environmental research. I’ve loved animals for as long as I can remember, and my journey has taken me from walking dogs in North Carolina to assisting with wildlife rescue and rewilding in the Peruvian Amazon.

I hold a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Washington and Lee University, where I focused on conservation biology and One Health. I’ve shadowed and assisted veterinarians in small animal, large animal, and mixed practices—helping with everything from surgeries and pregnancy checks to restraint and cytology. At Blue Ridge Animal Clinic and Natural Bridge Animal Hospital, I worked closely with dogs, cats, goats, llamas, kangaroos, and more. I’ve also volunteered with SPCA shelters and dog rescues since high school, and I walk and care for pets regularly through the Wag! platform.

Internationally, I served as a Wildlife Rehabilitation & Research Intern at Hoja Nueva in the Peruvian Amazon. There, I cared for exotic animals like jaguars, peccaries, and anacondas, conducted pre-release health checks, and monitored wild species through camera trapping and fieldwork. I also supported a catch-and-release caiman population project and volunteered at a local dog rescue, helping rehabilitate street dogs in need.

What makes me love working with pets is their ability to connect with people on a deep emotional level. I find immense joy in making them feel safe, cared for, and understood—whether it's a hyper puppy on a walk or an aging cat needing gentle care. I take pride in being detail-oriented, reliable, and compassionate in every setting I work in.

My skills include animal restraint, vaccine prep, cytology, enrichment design, basic grooming, and observational behavioral care. I’m also CPR and Wilderness First Aid certified. Whether it’s a family pet or a rescued wild animal, I treat every creature with patience, empathy, and respect.

I’m excited to meet you and your pets, and to provide them with the attentive, knowledgeable, and loving care they deserve!
