Recently, I was watching some friends' dogs - their two English mastiffs, both of them old, grumpy, and filled with anxiety. You see, I'd met Ben and Harmony a few times before, and they seemed to like me. It was rare, but I fit the bill: super loving with big l' Ben and female, respectful, distant with Harmony. They were both rescue animals, both with special needs (old and mastiff being two of many), both needing lots of tender love and care. The friends, they were wonderful and deserved the vacation they were on (a weekend out celebrating their engagement), and I realized that I wanted to give other people a chance for it. Too many parents of special babies don't feel right about kenneling their dogs, or leaving them with someone who doesn't understand the care required. I have been around dogs my entire life, several of them special needs animals that needed just a little more care than a 'normal' dog or cat. My most recent dog is a Great Dane Pit mix, a rescue who had been abandoned by his previous owners. At first, he had trouble with my other dog, Max. Now, less than six months later, Sam sleeps right next to his 'big brother,'doesn't attack him over food, and shares his toys. He's learned to sit, 'kennel', go, lay down, and jump. He's not the first dog I've taken in, nor is he the first cat. I gifted my grandmother "Orion" after rescuing him from behind a gas station. He was not-quite feral but took to living inside pretty quickly, and found love with someone who had never been an 'animal-person.'

It's hard, leaving our babies behind when you know they have trouble. I can say that I am able to handle whatever that trouble is, and still love your pet at the end.
