Lois’s Bio

My name is Lois Stein and ever since I was a little girl, I brought home stray dogs and cats. My passion has always been dogs/cats, although I love all animals. I worked for a Veterinarian in Manhattan. Those were the days when you could work as an apprentice and the Vet taught you what you needed to know. I also worked for the Veterinarian at the Animal Institute in the Bronx, New York. I did not know at the time, but they used animals for research. I was told not to talk to anyone about what I saw. I reported them to the Humane Society of the United States and then quit my job.
I was raised in the Bronx, New York and we lived in a very large apartment. My parents always felt that it was not fair to an animal to be cooped up in an apartment. They told me that when I got married, I could have all the dogs that I wanted. I went to the ASPCA in New York and brought home my first dog. I called my mom at work and told her that I brought home a dog. She said that I should take it back to the shelter before she and my dad arrived home. I told her that if the dog goes, I go also. (I did not know where I was going to go.) My parents came home and met Lad, the dog. They loved Laddie. My mom and dad would wake up early in the morning and take turns walking Laddie before they went to work. They used to leave the house very early, so they let me sleep before I had to get up and go to work. Lad lived 14 years.
I have been around animals for as long as I could remember and started caring for other people's dogs 30+ years ago.
I always wanted to be a Veterinarian but things did not work out that way. I got married instead and raised two boys. My children are grown and married and I am remarried to a wonderful man who puts up with me and my animals. He helps me walk them, feed them, clean up after them and pays all the Vet bills without a complaint.
Over the years, I have had many dogs. Each of them lived a long and happy life. My Lab/Husky named Heidi, lived to the ripe old age of 20. I currently have 9 dogs. They were all shelter dogs and strays. The shelter sent me an e-mail to see if I knew anyone who could foster an old mixed Corgi named Homer. He was my 9th dog.
I am the owner of Pet Pleasers, LLC, which is a pet sitting and dog training service. I wanted to train dogs and I thought about taking the ABC Dog Training Course for many years but kept putting it off. I finally took the course and graduated with honors through hard work and study.
