I have owned four dogs over the past ten years. The first three were all rescued. The two beagles were taken from their owners for abuse and neglect when they were 7 years old. They had been from the same litter, and only felt safe with each other. They had extensive medical and emotional issues, including heartworm, seizure disorder, separation anxiety, food aggressiveness, and extreme hip dysplasia (the vet thinks this was from being repeatedly kicked). They grew to trust us and were great, fun, happy dogs. We also adopted a Basset Hound that had been rescued from a puppy mill. She also had many of the same issues. We were happy to give them all a good, safe, loving home, and help them to love and trust.
After their passing, I adopted a puppy from the Humane Society. He is a mix of a German Shephard and a Coonhound. He's super high energy, very loving and emotionally secure and stable.
 
I worked extensively with my sister, training her dog. She bought an Australian Shephard, not knowing of their intelligence and energy. We simply found the dog some great "jobs" of it's own, I taught basic commands, and had my sister take the lead as Alpha.
