I am originally from the UK and have over 8 years experience caring for and teaching children 18 months old to 12th grade. I spent 6 years teaching English as a Second Language to Pre -K to 12th grade. Since moving to the United States two years ago I have continued working in education working as an After school care teacher and most recently as a Pre-K 4 Lead Teacher. I love music and drama and encourage children in my care to be as creative as possible I promote music, art and imaginative play. During my career I have been responsible for directing several plays and musical performances. As the first 6 years of my teaching career focused on teaching English Language Learners I specialized in teaching phonics and early reading skills. I helped design and implement materials for a 5 stage reading course that taught students basic phonics to Read more being able to read for meaning. These efforts were acknowledged and rewarded when I was chosen to represent my school in a Chinese national teaching competition held by the website sina.weibo and awarded the prestigious Five – Star teaching award. In my most recent position as a Pre-kindergarten 4 teacher I have had the fantastic experience of teaching several students with autism spectrum disorder, down’s syndrome and macrocephaly. Working with these students has highlighted my commitment to helping these students learn in a mainstream setting and achieve their own individualized goals. I designed and implemented IEP’s and worked closely with therapists to make sure they reached their targets.
