My name is Fredy Figueroa III and I grew up in Mid City Los Angeles. Previously Notre Dame High School with a scholarship to play baseball, I sadly had a career ending injury and could not continue playing baseball, it changed my life in a sense where I had to overcome the challenging question, what was I going to do for a career? I talk to kids about this incident and tell them that anyone can overcome adversity but that to be prepared for it because it can come at anytime and that just because things like this happen doesn’t mean there won’t be something better on the other side. I have went through multiple jobs and when I started working at the job I am right now is when I figured out that I want to become a Therapist and help kids with their issues. I have been working Read more with children since I was 15 years of age and I am now 23 years old working with adolescents at a group home. I volunteered for my high school service hours at the ED Center being a helping hand doing things such as tutoring kids, helping them with their homework and being a camp counselor when it came to the summer and winter camp portion. I then proceeded to volunteer at a 3 day weekend Dodgers Camp being a counselor as well helping the kids with their daily task. While being at those two different situations at a young age I left an impact on the kids in a positive way in them always remembering the conversations we had. I have also been a caregiver for my disabled mother who cannot do basic daily tasks certain days depending on the way her body is feeling. Those tasks include cooking, cleaning, taking her to appointments, I also am very helpful when it comes to homework in which I help her as well. Lastly I am currently working at a group home with adolescents and have been working with them for about two years now. I have learned a lot about myself and a lot about how children need a positive role model/models in their lives and how structure and consequences is a must have so kids not only hurt others but ultimately themselves. Since working here I have had a unique relationship with every child that has come in and out of this program and will continue making relationships and being a great role model for those who need one.
