Hi! I wanted to reach out to you and send a quick word of encouragement. I live in southern California and desperately want to relocate to Bothell. I have an MSW from USC, and decided that I want to open a small business: an after school program that works as sort of a way of building long term socialization. My son who will be 5 in a few weeks is high functioning on the autism spectrum, and I've been considering gearing it toward him, so it would probably be attractive to precocious kids who need to socialize, parents who want their kids to get out in nature and do hands on activities like beginning wood working, beginning coding and robotics, dance, music lessons, cooking, science experiments, beginning drawing lessons, and just lots to try with no pressure to love it and always having alternative activities. I am a single mom Read more with no child support, so having the capital to make the move and get my own place has been an issue when I have USC -sized debt. Right now I'm working part time at an after school program here, but I would do things on a much smaller scale if I had my choice-- so that my son and other kids could really connect. Your profile immediately flashed at me because my son is highly verbal and sweet also, and I have concerns about people understanding the implications of his autism-- the sensory and sometimes social stuff, and sometimes the intense emotions and communication (even though his vocab is crazy and his comprehension isn't bad at all...somehow it's hard sometimes). I would love to baby sit for you if I already lived in the area, since I have a soft spot for these "high functioning autistic" kids. This has led to a lot of research, and retraining in my thoughts, to try to understand and nurture my own. I bet that as little as he is, your son and him might get along for a few hours a week :) Anyway, since you're in the area of aspiration, I thought I'd reach out. I don't know when I'll be able to manifest this small program- the goal was next year, and to make it K-2nd grade... but I may open the age range wider. If you have any advice for me as a parent in WA, email me: chelseagrenfell@gmail.com. I have made plenty of contacts, but still have no idea how to pull it together without working elsewhere full time first, and I've been homeschooling instead. Take care, God bless.
