I grew up as #3 in a family of 5 kids, under the example of my two older brothers. They showed me how to be a good role model - how to guide, love, and look out for someone. Since becoming a big sister myself at age 5, it has become the single most important role in my life. I began helping babysit my sisters when I was 11; My father is a firefighter, and my stepmother a neonate respiratory therapist, who both work long, full days. I was paid to cook, clean, entertain, help them with their homework and put them to sleep on time; and I earned every penny. They are now 19 and 21, and I have seen my little peanuts transition from barbies and baby dolls, to bullies, boys, bras and bacne, and now they are navigating their first years away at college. Having such a Read more strong relationship with my younger sisters has helped me to understand children on a more fundamental level, and to recognize the differing needs and desires of different age groups of kids. These values set me apart during my time as a Resident Camp Counselor (Professional Big Sister), at the Camp Hollywoodland Girls sleepaway camp. I was responsible for anywhere from 12-20 campers, ages 6-18 years old, and spent the week learning, growing, exploring, and just hanging out with my campers. The knowledge I gained as a counselor - about children and childcare, organization and structure, and the nature of humans in general - was invaluable. Before college, I worked as a Robotics Instructor for K-12 students, at a so-cal startup called STEM Center USA. We followed a "learn by doing" pedagogy to guide our students through coding, building, and programming curriculum. I worked with students of all different backgrounds and capabilities, and pride myself on my ability to connect with my students, and to break down complex concepts into understandable and relatable terms. Presently, I’m finishing up my degree in Ecology & Evolution at UC Santa Cruz. I’m living in Oakland as I wrap up my final quarter, and am looking for consistent work as I navigate my transition into the professional world. I have worked with SitterCity families previously, helping with childcare at special events such as music festivals, as well as providing consistent after-school and date-night care for families. I really cherished the connections I’ve made through this work, and am positive I can be a positive influence and asset to your family. Please reach out if you think I’d be a good fit for you! :)
