My name is Emily Walsdorf, and I am a 22-year-old graduate student currently pursuing my masters in mental health and school counseling at the University of San Diego. I have had a passion for working with children since early high school where I gained my first paid positions working as various teacher’s aides and daycare attendants for various accredited schools, gyms, and daycares! I continued this passion into my undergrad career where I pursued a bachelors of arts in family and human services and worked various internships gaining intermediate experience as an elementary school counselor. I grew up in the Portland, Oregon area where I grew up dancing and skiing before moving to Eugene, Oregon to pursue my undergraduate degree as a third-generation duck! I have always had a desire to work in the schools and with children and families and moved to San Diego in September 2023 to pursue my masters in clinical mental health counseling/school counseling! While I have worked with children of all ages, I aspire to work closely with the elementary school population and their families in the San Diego area! Experience:✈️👩‍🎓📚 I began babysitting at the age of 12 when I first became CPR certified for family friends and neighbors, and over the years, I have expanded my experience to work with children of all ages, from infants to teenagers. I have worked in various gyms such as ClubSport and Bay Club in Portland, Oregon before working at my high school’s day care and preschool where I served the staff and community children in intermediate intervention activities. Post high-school graduation I have taken on previous roles of a teacher’s aide at Moss Street Children’s Center as well as the Learning Tree before gaining experience in advising undergraduate roles as a school counselor at BEST’s afterschool program in Eugene, Oregon. I have also worked as a camp counselor during summers, where I gained valuable experience in managing group dynamics, organizing activities, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all children under my care. Additionally, my studies in school counseling have equipped me with knowledge in child development, behavior management techniques, and effective communication skills that I apply in my babysitting responsibilities. I currently intern as a school counselor at La Mesa arts academy where I work individually with students on my caseload to discuss emotional, social, and academic experiences with students between the stages of fourth and eighth grade. I am comfortable with tasks such as meal preparation, morning routines, homework help, building rapport, and engaging children in age-appropriate activities that promote learning and creativity. Additionally, my studies in school counseling have equipped me with knowledge in child development, behavior management techniques, and effective communication skills that I apply in my babysitting responsibilities. I have also recently had experience working in Colombia as an international school counselor which as expanded my skills socially and multiculturally!
