I've been working with children for over 13 years now. From babysitting to teaching art/early education, to coaching field hockey. Before moving to Colorado for my MFA program, I spent two years working as a pre-school teacher assistant with 3-5 year olds -- it was difficult to leave that position, because I formed some amazing bonds with those children, and still maintain contact with some of their families, even now. Then, during my program, I worked with about 4 different families, one of whom I came to know an infant from the day they were brought home from the hospital until they were about 7 months old! I have since then moved to Santa Cruz, CA, and had a full-time personal assistant job with a nanny component, which involved a lot of multi-tasking, traveling, cooking, etc. While the assistantship wasn't a good fit, I do miss working in childcare, and Read more feel that the experience made me an even stronger caregiver in the end. I aspire to be a good teacher and role model in this life, but I also think that there's so much you can learn from children as well. I know I have. Everything from multi-tasking amidst chaos and disorder to patience during temper tantrums, the effective rhetoric to promote the eating of vegetables. But I've also learned compassion, mindfulness, and a stronger appreciation for all things, no matter how insignificant some things may seem. To see the world through a child's eyes is truly a gift. I like to consider myself a child at heart.
