Ever since I can remember I've been around children. My mother ran an in-home daycare while I was still a child myself, which may have influenced my desire to work with children. In middle school, I briefly watched my neighbors baby boy while she picked up her second child from school. Then in high school, I watched two elementary school aged girls for about two years until I entered the track team. I would meet them at the bus stop, walk them home, go over homework, serve dinner, and of course play. When I began college, I cared for a two year old boy on weekends as needed. Later on in college I cared for two girls, ages 3 and 7 when I started, for about two years. I would watch them over breaks, summer vacation, and some weekends. After college, I cared for a family with a four month Read more old boy and a four year old girl. I stayed with them for two years and still keep in contact today. The last family I was with had a four month old boy and a two year old boy and I stayed with them for a year. What I like to do with children- I enjoy spending time outdoors so there have been many trips to the beach, hiking areas such as Sleeping Giant, walking along rivers such as the derby/shelton walkway, trips to the playground, as well as trips to the Beardsley zoo. I also enjoy taking children to museums such as the Peabody museum in New Haven, CT and Stepping Stones in Norwalk, CT. The Maritime Aquarium is another fun outdoor/indoor activity. Spending time indoors is just as great as it allows time for arts and crafts, exploring the imagination, cuddling on the couch while reading books, dancing to music, and much more. What I learned from college courses is nothing compared to the one on one experience of watching children progress through all the stages of growing and learning. I loved that I was there to help and see the changes and hope to continue doing so. However, my dream is to one day become an Art Therapist working mainly with children.
