Hi all parents! My name is Lydia Watts and I am an undergraduate student at American University seeking a bachelors degree in the school of arts and sciences. I have experience working with children in a summer camp setting at an urban farm called Tucson Village Farm, as a part of my Americorps position. The Tucson Village Farm is a sustainable urban farm that engages youth in farm-to-table learning about nutrition and healthy eating. They have multiple summer camp programs and are a working farm all year long. I worked on three of their summer camps during the summer of 2021. The first was their “First Farmers Educational Camp”, where kids 10-13 engaged in growing, making, and learning about the food they eat at camp. I helped with all aspects of the camp as the consoulers rotated jobs every day. I created, facilitated, and taught lessons about phytonutrients, the parts Read more of a bug, how plants grow, ect. I also helped kids learn how to plant seeds and grow them. When it was time for lunch, I worked in the kitchen, where we instructed the kids on how to make different dishes such as pizza from scratch, omelets, and potato tacos. I also worked at “Culinary Camp” which is a farm-to-table camp that teaches 10-14 year olds how to cook their own food. This camp was like a traditional restaurant kitchen except young children were our chefs. We taught them how to clean properly and sanitize the kitchen, make healthy decisions about the food they wanted to make, basic cooking skills, and how to work together as a team. I developed recipes and was a key competent in organizing the camp to make sure it all ran smoothly. Lastly, I worked at “Adventure Camp” in Camp Verde, Prescott National Forest. I left my phone behind for two weeks and was tasked with being responsible for 20 young girls as their counselor and mentor. We coached them through various team building exercises and cared for them 24/7. I have done this camp three years, in the summer of 2018, the summer of 2019, and the summer of 2021. I enjoy and am experienced in finding fun things to do to occupy kids time, an experienced chef who has extensive knowledge of safety and sanitation techniques when kids are in the kitchen, and have experience teaching kids. Thank you for your time and consideration!
