I’m Emma, 24 years old. Following my completion of a psychology degree with a specialization in developmental psychology, I have chosen to take a sabbatical before pursuing a graduate degree in child psychology. During the past year, I have been fortunate to have been employed as a certified counselor for the aftercare program at Blue Lake Elementary in Boca Raton. This means I have my own class of 20 first graders who I plan new activities for every day. Yesterday, we made backpack pets out of pipe cleaners! We also have built towers with straws, written letters to stuffies, drawn maps to imaginary places, and much more. I love my first graders and being with them every day, including coming up with new ideas. It’s not easy to please a room of 6-7 year olds, but we work together to make sure everyone is having fun while getting the chance Read more to express their creativity, work on critical thinking and problem solving, and learn about the world in the process. I am sad to leave, but I need more hours than the district can provide. I am overjoyed, however, to be stepping back into nannying! There is something so special about being able to form and nurture deep connection and trust with children whom you see daily. One part of nannying that I miss is having enough time to foster these relationships with children. In my time at Blue Lake, my first priority was to the class as a whole, and my second to kids who may have been struggling, whether it was just a rough day, or maybe a child had special needs and would repeatedly need support, which I was happy to provide. Because my attention had to be given out based on need, I frequently felt like I wasn’t doing enough. I am very excited to be able to have only a single family to give my undivided attention to. I was a nanny for a family with a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old in 2019 before leaving for college. I grew very close to them and was sad to see them move away when I got back. I had summer nannying positions throughout high school as well. My experience with childcare begins with my siblings, whom I cared for from the time we got home from school until sometimes pretty late in the evening. When I was 11, I began sitting for other families in my neighborhood and was always asked back with parents saying their children asked for me to come play with them. That is what I do with kids — play. I love childcare because I get to escape for a bit and be silly, laugh, and love big.
