Hello, my name is Sandi, and I moved to Honolulu two years ago to be a nanny for a 1.5 year old. I am now working as staff pastor with an organization called Youth With a Mission, but have time to be seeking occasional babysitting jobs. I have vast experience working with children in many contexts.  I was a preschool teacher’s aide for 14 years, working with an incredibly gifted teacher. She taught me how to effectively manage challenging behavioral situations while maintaining a thriving learning environment.  I have also worked as an elementary school tutor in various locations: Alberta, Canada; a private school in western New York; and an inner city school in Chicago.  I was also a children's librarian for 2 years and fell in love doing baby, toddler, and preschool story times. I have a deep love for children's literature and instilling a love for reading in Read more young children. My caregiving philosophy is similar to my own life philosophy.  I enjoy doing a variety of activities - art, running, playing games, cooking, reading, and being outside.  Thus, I do all these with children in “simpler” ways.  I love turning random moments into teachable lessons, whether it be talking about the weather, the upcoming holiday, or reading a new book.  Variety keeps the children interested, yet maintaining structures of snack and rest time gives them a sense of stability.   I love to celebrate the little things in life with children. Though I love play and creativity, I also encourage children to use their words to work through problems or behavioral issues that arise.  I firmly believe children should know why what they did was not the best choice and how they could have done it differently.  I celebrate their decisions to behave well and affirm their creativity, intelligence, kindness, helpfulness, etc.  Overall, I love children and enjoy seeing them grow and change! My service to any family is to provide quality care for the children and to keep a good relationship with the parents, hearing their desires and goals for their children while providing feedback from my time with them.
