I've worked for 2+ years as the Literacy Center Supervisor at a Boys & Girls Club in Portland. There are around 40 kids in my Literacy Program, ranging from 1st to 5th grade, and during the school year I teach them in classes of 10-12 students. While I'm not teaching I like to spend any extra time engaging larger groups of kids in educational activities -- especially leading fun science experiments, sharing interesting documentaries, teaching them about gardening & healthy food choices, facilitating art projects, and chaperoning field trips. Kids know me as the friendly lady who loves anything to do with science, space, & reading! Since I have so much experience providing kids with structured activities, I'd really like to care for a family that encourages a love of learning. I'd be more than happy to create fun & educational activities for them all day long, and I have Read more no problem taking trips to museums, parks, and other fun places! Here's a timeline of my experience, if you're interested in the details: Summer 2014: I spent mornings leading camps for kids of all ages (Game Show Mania, Mad Scientists, Imaginarium Inventions, Urban Gardening, Space Camp) and afternoons leading activities for 6- and 7-year olds. School Years 2013-2014 & 2012-2013: I taught Literacy Classes to 1st-5th graders using the Slingerland Approach and led extra programs for kids of all ages about gardening, healthy eating, & space science. Summer 2013: I spent mornings leading Summer Camps (Wacky Experiments, Baker's Brigade, Icky Sticky Camp, Dr. Seuss Camp) and afternoons leading programs in all areas for kids ages 6-12. Summer 2012: I worked in the Teen Center and created fun & educational programming for kids ages 13-18. 2009-2011: While attending college at Valparaiso University I worked at a homeless shelter providing daycare for clients while they went to meetings and workshops (mostly ages 0-5). I also volunteered as a tutor for elementary school students at a homeless shelter and a Boys & Girls Club four nights a week. 2008-2009: I babysat my nephew several days a week during his first 18 months. I learned a lot about caring for infants during this time with the help of my sister and mother! pre-2008: Various short-term babysitting throughout high school, ages 2-6.
