Almost an eight year age gap is what shocks people when I say I have an older brother. I cherish the memories we made when he took me to Blockbuster while waiting for our Mayflower Chinese food delivery to be ready for pickup. They say when your children grow up its hardest for the parents to accept that their flesh and blood has left the bird’s nest, but no one ever talks about what it’s like for the sibling. I was the baby in my family, always was and always have been. I remember going to a wedding when I was 6 years old, which was basically my own mini version of the Oscars. It was that important to me. I danced and danced, but my mom showed me a mother’s newborn baby. That night while all the adults danced I got to hold the baby. I did not move Read more my arm once as that baby was so perfectly still and quiet I couldn’t be bothered to accidentally wake her. That experience is my first memory taking care of someone else’s child while I myself was still a child. Over the years I babysat for my cousin who I wasn’t even much older than, but to be trusted with that responsibility as a ten year old young girl was so special to me. I started babysitting on weekends for my Aunt and Uncles baby daughter when she was a newborn just as I entered fifth grade. I was a girl scout for eight years of my life where we would spend time volunteering in nursing homes and working with children at events. I was a camp counselor for 10-12 year old girls for two summers and spent another summer nannying for a seven year old boy. In middle school I babysat my neighbor’s three young girls all less than five years of age, while their parents went out on weekends. I am 23 now and have utter baby fever, but not enough fever where I want my own just yet, but some day. Being able to be trusted enough to take care of someone’s children is an honor I don’t think any other job could provide me. I have such a strong relationship with my older brother that I just want to be an older role model for someone else. I am CPR certified, can talk to a brick wall and I am a strong advocate of playing games and not solely playing video games. The best games of my childhood where playing “House” and “Lava” and I want to share my age old games with others. Barbies come in at a close second, but don’t worry legos have a high spot up there too. I love care giving because I can help kids be kids and show them that there is so much love and fun in this world.
