I became a caregiver my freshman year of high school. I started babysitting my neighbors some weekends and learned that I loved spending time with kids because I felt that for the first time in my life I was responsible for something bigger than myself. Now I am a freshman in college and I have watched several families grow and change through each year. One girl in particular named Lily, I first changed her diapers and I am now teaching her cursive. During the summer between my junior and senior years in high school I worked at my former preschool and helped in the Montessori classroom with ages 2-5. This is where I learned to love and understand the teaching and development areas of caregiving. By seeing these children everyday I had the opportunity to observe how they progressed over a three-month period. My biggest fascination was in the development Read more of 2 year olds. Before I met Charlotte, I did not know what her limitations would be that summer or how she would grow out of them. I was quick to learn that although she could not yet talk she could nonetheless understand everything that I was saying. To communicate all she would do is point. She would point to be picked up, to be brought somewhere, or to address someone specifically. She learned to point because that was the way other people could understand her. To watch her develop and by the end of the summer be able to talk was incredible, I had never before seen this stage in a child’s life and understood what it meant in the developmental process. During my junior year of high school I received my lifeguarding certificate and with that became certified in first aid and CPR, with a special emphasis on water related injuries. Just this year I have seen my lifeguard training come back when it helped me prevent one of my friends from hitting her head against a cement step when she had fallen down some stairs. I spent the summer after high school as a librarian and worked with kids often. I had the chance to read to kids and kids read to me. I also helped parents find books that worked with their child’s reading level. I am good at taking care of kids because I am patient, understanding and a good listener. I love this job because it gives me more opportunities to learn and I enjoy spending time with kids and helping them grow.
