I love working with children, and because of this, I was at a job for three years working with them every day. After school, I was with the kids (ages 6-13) doing multiple activities with them including crafts, homework help that extended to tutoring (reading, writing, social sciences, math, science with occasional music and art class help), outdoor activities (sports, playground games, chalk drawing), field trips (ice cream, park, beach, museums, zoo), organizing snack times and ensuring all specific health and allergy requirements are met, and indoor activities (games, movies, reading). I was responsible for creating a fun and safe atmosphere for 15+ children every day with some help from other staff, ensuring that every child's needs were met. During this time, I not only worked with these children, but built relationships with them and their families. I have done work with families over the summers (three 8 year old children) with giving care to their children. I cooked for the children (breakfast and lunch with the occasional dinner) M-F for the three months of the summer. I created art projects, help with reading (each of us read a chapter of a book or a short book every day together), played outside and inside with the children, and took them out occasionally to do different activities (bowling, mini golf, beach). Along with these children, I have worked with children with disabilities inside and outside of the classroom. I helped them dress for gym class and helped them through various class activities every day including softball, basketball, swimming, volleyball, etc. I helped them get to class and stay focused during class on the tasks at hand. I mainly worked with children with Autism and Down's Syndrome, but I do have experience with Aspergers and Cerebral Palsy children as well. I helped them through various endeavors including sports(softball, flag football, basketball, etc.) and general running and walking. Along with during gym class, I helped them in the classroom with light tutoring in various subjects as well as simply keeping them calm and focused. At Hofstra, I work with children in a swimming environment, teaching them the beginning of swimming one-on-one. I work with kids on Saturdays to continually improve their swimming techniques whether they are just starting out or have had experience in the pool.
