Hi! I'm Afton, and I am a 28-year old educator with over 5 years of work experience with preschool and elementary-aged children. I am a warm, enthusiastic, and energetic professional currently working as a Behavior Support Specialist for a Denver-based Head Start organization. I am seeking a part-time position through the end of July. Although I am young, I have been caring for young children for almost 15 years. I was a precocious but responsible child who began babysitting my three younger siblings and neighbors at age 12 (homemade business cards and all!). Starting at age 15, I spent summers working part-time as a babysitter for only children and multiples, and at childcare centers as an assistant. Upon graduating college, I began working full-time in a variety of private, public, and charter schools as a lead teacher both domestically and abroad. During school breaks, I have occasionally returned to my Read more "roots" as a babysitter part-time. I have experience with managing siblings; am comfortable keeping house and/or taking care of pets; and enjoy singing, reading and telling stories, cooking simple meals and snacks, gardening and exploring nature, and making crafts with young children. I am a licensed Early Childhood educator; my certification includes Mild/Moderate Intervention for children with exceptional needs. I am fluent in Spanish and conversant in Mandarin Chinese as well as being CPR and First Aid certified. NOTE: I am non-binary and use they/them pronouns in the workplace and with trusted friends and family. I know this can make some parents uncomfortable, so I allow binary pronouns like she/her or he/him based on what children and families assume if it puts them at ease. I do ask that children and families call me "Teacher Afton" or just "Afton" instead of "Miss/Mister Afton". Since cutting my hair short again after the new year, lately I am often asked if I'm a boy or a girl. If it is alright with teachers and parents, I usually explain my gender to curious young children by saying, "Most people are either a boy or a girl. Some people are a little different, like me.
