Hello! My name is Emily and my two greatest passions in life are children and creativity. For years I babysat my sisters and all of my parents friend’s children. I was briefly a Sunday School Teacher Assistant, working with a variety of ages at one time. I was professionally trained through Oaklawn Residential to care and look after for youth dealing with trauma and adverse childhood experiences, as well as mental illness and disability. I utilize the skills I acquired there in my every day life when interacting with people of all ages and all walks of life. I am also trained to care for children with diabetes and many other medical issues. My approach to babysitting and caring for children is heavily rooted in a “whole or gentle parenting and caring” style. I use my passion for creativity to come up with fun activities to get children engaged in Read more the arts while educating them about coping skills and how the different activities can be done when dealing with frustration or boredom. I provide all the necessary materials and offer a variety of creative outlets so that every child can find something they enjoy doing or may have an interest in learning how to do. I love to have fun! I’m proficient in video games and board games. I love sports and skateboarding and am excited when I’m able to get kids involved. I’m a book nerd and I love to hear recommendations from kids who love to read. I play the clarinet and flute and love being involved with music practice. And as much as I enjoy having a blast, I stress the importance of housekeeping and hygiene. Various songs can make clean up another game or fun time. It’s my personal philosophy that the world can only get better when we raise better children and though my part as a babysitter is small, my hope is to leave the children and family with skills they can implement in their own lives to help them continue to thrive and strive. I’m confident in my ability to empathize with families of all shapes, colors, and sizes. I encourage acceptance and support. What sets me apart from other sitters is that I confidently walk the fine line between being a friend and being simply an authority figure. What I mean by that is that I’m not there to be friends with the child, as many young babysitters end up doing; this is highly inappropriate and can end up with the child exploiting the absent power dynamic and doing things the parents or guardians wouldn’t normally approve of; such as watching certain tv shows or playing certain video games. On the other side of the coin I avoid being a simple “no fun” authority figure; which can lead to a child completely shutting down or out and may cause them to dread being babysat. I achieve this by getting engaged with the child by offering and encouraging positive and healthy activities.
