I am a current graduate student at Emory University, one semester away from receiving my master's degree in Public Health. I graduated from the University of Kentucky with two bachelor's degrees: one in Anthropology and one in Public Health. Health and wellbeing are a huge focus of my career, and I believe that having a healthy and happy childhood is a major factor in living a healthy life. I began babysitting at a young age, starting with the children of family and friends. This gave me the opportunity to learn early on that I love working with children. In high school, I regularly babysat for an 8-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother. There, I would prepare the children dinner, play with them, do bedtime activities, and put them to bed. In college, I became a nanny to a sweet 6-year-old girl and her wild 4-year-old identical twin brothers. There, I Read more would wake the children up, make them meals throughout the day, help with hygiene activities such as brushing teeth and bathing, do chores around the home, and spend lots of time playing, both inside and outside. I have experience babysitting up to 7 children at once, with ages ranging from 1 year old to 7 years old. Also in college, I became a student teacher at the University of Kentucky's Early Childhood Laboratory, where I cared for and taught children from the ages of 10 months to 18 months in a classroom setting. My duties at this position included diaper changes, setting up and assisting the children with snack time, applying sunscreen and getting the children ready to go outside, taking the children for walks on the premises, and giving parents status reports on their children at the end of the day. A huge part of this position was making it a priority to help the children engage with learning through play, which I think is an essential part of childcare. A further experience with caregiving that I have comes from my time working in an assisted living facility. There, I spent most of my time in the memory care department, while also caring for residents of the main side. My responsibilities in this job included bathing, doing laundry, facilitating activities of daily living, preparing meals and assisting with feeding, playing games with the residents, and assisting with administering medications. Through my experiences, I have learned what it means to be a kind and compassionate caregiver and how important it is to ensure that caring for others is a priority.
