I am a 22-year-old female from State College, Pennsylvania living in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the summer and hope to return after I graduate in spring of 2017. In the fall I will be entering my senior year as a psychology-neuroscience and biology double major at Pennsylvania State University. I have ambitions of continuing on to medical school to become a physician in pediatric neurology. During the school year I work for a research lab for the head of undergraduate psychology, run for Club Cross Country and I am the THON family relations chair for the Student Red Cross Club, an organization participating in THON dance marathon, the largest student run philanthropy in the world supporting the fight against pediatric cancer. I am an employee for the Community Education Extended Learning (CEEL) Program. The CEEL Program is a before and after school program for elementary school students. This wonderful program has Read more allowed me to bond with a group of approximately 40 students ages 4 to 12 years old and their parents over the past two years. The CEEL program provides me with opportunities to assist teachers in leading STEM, English, Art, Culture, Language and Physical activity classes, as well as assisting kids with their homework and spending designated free time smiling over LEGO dinosaur creations and hula-hoop contests. From the CEEL Program I have learned how to personalize my interactions with every child, whether it’s a first grade girl who is independent and loves to be outside, or a fourth grade boy who loves to draw and read. I started babysitting for my parents’ friends when I was 13 years old, after taking a babysitting course through the Red Cross. I previously worked for the ARC doing assisted living for women with intellectual disabilities, where I received CPR certification, Red Cross first aid certification and training to administer medications. I left that job to become a nanny for a 4-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy who I got to spend a lot of time with making up games to play, reading books, helping the boy with his homework, and taking them to the pool and parks. The oldest child has allergies so I have been taught to use an EpiPen in case of emergencies. I currently babysit for multiple families on a regular basis during the school year. Over the past 9 years I have become comfortable watching children as young as 1-year-old and as old as 13-years-old.
