I am currently a kindergarten teaching assistant in a Wellesley public school. I have been in child care since 2005. The families I work with now have multiple children. One family has three kids (5, 8 and 10) and the other has two (8 and 11). I am comfortable working with younger kids (6 and under) but I do not mind taking care of older ones. I enjoy working with younger kids because I used to be a preschool teacher. I know a lot of fun activities and games for younger children. I feel that I can really help with creativity. I find that children these days spend a lot of time "plugged in" and it has been detrimental to their imagination. I volunteer at CitySprouts which introduces school gardens as part of the curriculum in Cambridge public schools. I help water the gardens over the summer. (http://www.citysprouts.org/). I also Read more volunteer for Gawad Kalinga, which is a movement to eradicate poverty in the Philippines (where I am originally from). I help out with fundraisers and getting the word out. (http://www.gk1world.com/). I am fluent in Tagalog, which is the language in the Philippines. I also can understand a little bit of Spanish. I encourage the children to play outside for at least an hour. Like I said previously, I rarely allow the children to watch TV because I have learned that children watch an average of 4-5 hours each day. Children are like sponges and will absorb the messages they see on TV. They usually don't understand most of what they see and tend to internalize it, which can cause challenging and hard to manage behavior. I like to make use of space and usually play games that involve moving around and using the imagination. One of my favorite games to play is making up a story and acting it out. I also like creating obstacle courses outside to get the children running. As for toys, I like the ones that allow creativity, such as play dough.
