I am a 52 year old MCPS Paraeducator with a BA in Psychology looking for summer employment. I have worked mainly with troubled adolescents for 30 years in various settings- 15 years for the State of Maryland @ RICA-Rockville in their residential program as Unit Coordinator of a middle school boy's unit, 4 yeas as a Middle School Counselor @ SSFS and 10 years as a Paraeducator in the Bridge Program @ Winston Churchill High School. Along with my job for MCPS, I have worked part time in the evening for Target Community and Educational Services, Inc. for 9 years providing drop-in services to individuals with developmental disabilities. My role for this agency is to render support to clients in a variety of area in order that they may live independently. I also worked 3 summers for Montgomery County's Therapeutic Recreation Department as Assistant Director and then Director for camp Read more Big /Little Pines, ages 5-12. Over the 30 years I have worked with children I have participated in hundreds of hours worth of relevant trainings (both mandatory and optional) that are pertinent to my ongoing development as an Educator and/or Counselor. The topics range from Crisis Prevention/Management and Conflict Resolution to CPR/First Aid, Bullying Prevention and Whole Child Wellness. I thoroughly enjoy working with children of all ages and have, since my own youth, always had an ability to connect and engage with kids. I know how to create fun and I love to laugh. I enjoy sports, animals, activities of all kinds and am quick to find the humor in situations. I know the value of maintaining structure and routine in a child's day but also how to do it while exercising flexibility when it's needed. I am well versed on the importance of clear, consistent expectations and have a keen ear and eye for recognizing when it's time to redirect potentially problematic behaviors. Best of all, I could only be marginally further away from the age of a typical "millennial" and, therefore, am not more connected to my electronics than I am to what's going on right in front of me. When I left the house as a youngster, the phone was firmly attached to the kitchen wall where it remained until I returned home. Remarkably, I found I was able to survive the day without a perpetual bombardment of incoming communication from the entire world and, conversely, had no desire to contact every person I knew to inform them about what I was doing the exact moment I was doing it! My focus will be on your kids!
