Hi, my name is Oliver! I am a college student enrolled in George Washington University, but due to Coronavirus I am attending online university here in Berkeley. I have worked the majority of high school with children ranging from 3 months to 11 years old. I have always loved spending time with children, learning from them, and seeing how they interact with the world. I always have had a very easy and fun time connecting with children. I try my hardest to communicate to the kids I work with that they are important and their voices matter, and I treat them with respect, listening to feelings or worries they may have, as it can be easy to ignore or write these off especially when they seem unreasonable or don't make sense to an adult. I make sure to incorporate consent, mindfulness, gratitude, and emotional awareness/openness when I spend time with Read more children. I love to play games, listen to music, and create art(with clay, paint, and more) with children- and most especially with art, I recognize the strong effect it can have on a child's self esteem and self expression and I make an effort to always encourage creativity and curiosity in any form. Spending time outdoors, with plants, fresh air, and watching nature is most especially a way to foster curiosity in kids and I enjoy gardening a lot as it offers children a chance to grow and nurture a small plant, or harvest vegetables they grew themselves, and this feeling, and their reactions, are so amazing to see in the children I have worked with. I make an extra effort to not patronize or minimize when a child is struggling, instead actively listening no matter what they are upset about. Because spending time with children is often so healing and uplifting, babysitting and childcare to me is not just a job, but a relationship to foster and a way for me to help the children I work with grow in their own ways.
